What Is The Writing Process?
1. Experience:
Before you venture into your first piece of writing in this class you need to have an idea of what you like and what you like to write about. You need to have something to share with your audience - this is where your writer's notebook will come in handy (writer's notebook instructions to follow). You will put yourself into your writer's notebook each day - anything that strikes the writer within you will be placed into your notebook. By the time your notebook is finished you will be following our your ears with writing ideas.

2. Pre-Write:
Once we got our notebooks together an a few ideas jotted down we are going to narrow our focus. I want each of you to find a particular event, photo, family experience, etc that you really want to write in depth on and start to scribble down some notes - try to be specific as to get a general direction with your piece. Focus on one small point in time, that will make it easier for you to write down specific notes.

3. Rought Draft:
Now that we have our specific event and notes down, lets start writing. Don't get too bogged down with the technical aspect of the paper, this is only a rough draft. Organize your thoughts and make sure that each paragraph transitions smoothly to the next. We are spewing our ideas out.

4. Revise:
We are looking at our papers and making sure our paragraphs transition smoothly, checking our grammar and punctuation along the way. This is a perfect time to conference with the teacher or your peers, do not fret no one is here to tear your writing apart. We are all going to learn to revise (meaning REVISIT) each others papers, making comments on what we like and where we think each other could strengthen their papers. NO ONE will bash each others writing. I want to be able to see your voices within your writings, OWN your writing!

5. Edit:
Now that we have peer edited and conferenced lets get down to the nitty gritty. Everyone needs to check grammar, spelling, word choice, and this does not mean just use spell check on your computers! Look for the details that need to be added to strengthen a sentence - look for the unnecessary sentences that weaken your paragraphs. If something does not seem to fit then remove it. Each word should have a firm purpose within the paper.

6. Final Copy:
This is the draft your audience is going to be reading. Make sure you love it because if it is just okay for you then it is going to be, at best, just okay for your audience.

7. Publish/Share:
We are all going to have at least three pieces of writing published this year. No one writes better than when they know a mass of people will be reading and critiquing their writing. So we are going to push ourselves and write to get published. Sure, we will do a lot of personal spews that are for our own personal satisfaction but the majority of our writings will be submitted to our audiences!
